LONDON NIKE X PEDRO LOURENCO COLLECTION WITH MARIA SHARAPOVA

PERFORMANCE WEAR MEETS HIGH FASHION

One of the advantages of my daughter's university Central Saint Martins College in London is the close collaboration and interaction with the fashion industry.
I was lucky enough to be in London when Alena received an invitation to a panel discussion with tennis pro Maria Sharapova (current world ranking no.2) and Brazilian fashion designer Pedro Lourenço whose collaborative collection with Nike just launched. Their discussion on sport, fashion and innovation with Lou Stoppard (Editor at SHOWstudio) at Nike Lab in Shoreditch, London centres on the ever-changing relationship between sport and high fashion and features, and the end, questions from fashion students and UK fashion journalists.
BTW, Maria is not only a fantastic tennis player but we met her as a very smart, open and beautiful woman!

When it feels good, it feels pretty damn good!

"When you walk through the tunnel to the centre court and you know you are playing in front of thousands of people, you must feel comfortable in your own skin and what you are wearing that it brings out the best in your level. When it feels good, it feels pretty damn good!" Maria Sharapova says.

Asked whether she feels fashion has come more into sportswear, Maria agrees and talks about more individuality, colour and details in sports clothes but emphasises "if you don't have a material that is lightweight, that is breathable, it doesn't matter how it looks like, you are only gonna wear it once or twice!"

According to Pedro Lourenço, function has priority and his goal is to connect both worlds: Sport and fashion and thinks innovation is cool and exciting and needs to become more seamless with fashion. He enjoys street style where people effortless mix sports clothes and high end style.

Question raised by my daughter

"We work very far in advance and we are currently looking at spring 2016. When you are working with a product and because I am moving and sweating a lot, I test the dresses myself and me meet about 4 to 5 times a year and I test the materials I wear. Sometimes we make a dress out of a material that is not the exact shape but I wear test it myself because I put it through what I would work in. So if anyone sweats less than I do then no one has a problem! We go through meetings where we look at inspirations and colours and our main goal is the four Grand Slams. We are inspired by a city or a moment and for my French Open dress we put a little Tiffany pearl on the back as a little detail!"

When it feels good, it feels pretty damn good!
